Usually this consisted of slightly lengthening individual notes, so that they often overlapped. In play, this produces a constant melody line without audible gaps. However if there were repeated notes, a gap was desired so that the notes would remain distinct, so the first was often shortened. | |bass clef, throughout |shifted octaves |Because of the 20-note scale available on the Roller Organ, it was often necessary to shift low "bass" notes up an octave. At the same time, "tenor" notes were sometimes shifted down an octave, to preserve pleasing intervals. | |15th (full) measure |D# replaced with D |Although this changes the harmony slightly, it sounds OK. Was this intentional--or an error? | |17th, 19th measure |B, C# (eighth notes) omitted |Although the B and C# could have been included by shifting up an octave, it was not acceptable: Measure 17 already has a B quarter note in the treble. Measure 19 has a treble B for the 2nd eighth, and an added C# would have produced discord rather than a pleasing run. In neither measure would the run have resolved to the following D in the lower octave. | |18th measure |B shortened |There does not seem to be a good reason for shortening this note. Was this intentional--or an error? | |18th measure |A# replaced with A |The A# (corresponding to a D# for a common Gem) was not available in the 20-note scale. | |20th measure |A added in the treble harmony (//alto//) |A full chord was evidently desired on this last note. |
