One day as I strayed, thro' a beautiful glade,
Enjoying a sweet Summer breeze,
I chanc'd to behold the remains of an old
Ruined Abbey o'ershadowed by trees!
As a picture too grand I chanc'd to look down
A figure and form I did see.
Of a lovely young maid who reclined 'neath the shade
Of a large spreading horse chestnut tree.

No eye to see, No tongue to tell,
The birds only knew of our wooing,
As I fondly embraced her dear little face,
Down by the old Abbey ruin.
As closer I crept I found that she slept
I noislessly crept closer still.
I gazed with excess at the charm she posess'd
Till my heart with love quickly did fill.
It seemed like a dream, she awoke with a scream
And jump'd to her feet in dismay.
I took off my hat, beg pardon for that,
For disturbing you in such a way.
I told her my name, soon friends we became,
Her shyness i could not compare,
She fluttered and flushed, turn'd pale then blush'd,
When I told her how long I'd been there;
By the old Abbey wall I told her that all
I had in this world she might share,
And none but the birds heard our fond loving words
Or witnessed our love making there.
