The melody and opening lyrics are quite similar to Buffalo Gals, which was first published by Cool White (John Hodges), a blackface minstrel with the Virginia Serenaders, in 1844 as Lubly Fan. The melody is similar to Im Grunewald, im Grunewald ist Holzauktion, a music hall song from Germany.
