Although cob 189a has plenty of Octave Notes compared to 189, it may not be “the” early arrangement. A copy has not been found with the typical finish or labeling found on other early cobs. It also fails one other test that almost all early arrangement versions pass. For the large majority of earliest cobs, the first note on the cobs starts noticeably further around as you begin cranking. Since 189a starts at the usual location for later cobs it is thought that an earlier version may exists. An extra octaves version of #168 - "La Mascotte" Quadrilles—I, designated 168a, may also not be the earliest version.
