#341 - Harugari Lodge Song—I

prev | next

“Like any group of people coming to a strange, new land, Germans tended to band together, finding strength in numbers. On March 8, 1847, this led to the founding of the German Order of the Harugari in New York City, a movement that soon spread throughout the country. The word reportedly comes from an old German word “Haruc,” meaning “holy shrine; a meeting place under oak trees.” Harugari is an ancient Teutonic term for priest. Lodges were established to help members in need, preserve the German language here and promote German culture and tradition. […] Some Harugari groups continue today.”1)
